Meijer LPGA Community Concert presented by General Mills Announces Talent

The Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft has partnered with General Mills to provide a community concert featuring OneRepublic on July 25 at Van Andel Arena®, tournament officials announced today.

Fans will recognize OneRepublic’s hit, “Counting Stars,” which is the title track on their most recent album Native. Other notable tracks from Native include “Love Runs Out,” “I Lived,” and “If I Lose Myself.”

“This year’s Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft will once again bring top talent – on the stage and the golf course – to Grand Rapids,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “We are pleased to partner with General Mills once again this year, and believe the community will embrace the opportunity to hear the musical talents of OneRepublic.”

Concert tickets will go on sale in early May at and will start at $25 each.  Applicable ticket fees will apply.

With Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer as the title sponsor, the driving mission of the tournament is focused on feeding the hungry and improving the quality of life within the region. The tournament will coincide with the retailer’s Simply Give program, which has raised nearly $14 million for food pantries across the Midwest since its inception in November 2008.

Similar to last year, proceeds from the tournament – and each of the week’s festivities including the community concert – will benefit the Simply Give program. The inaugural Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft raised $600,000 for the Simply Give program to feed those in need.

The Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft will host a full field of 144 players playing 72 holes of stroke play over four days of competition July 21-26 at Blythefield Country Club.

After a successful inaugural tournament that generated $600,000 for food pantries across the Midwest, the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft will return to Grand Rapids in 2015 for another week of community events and the best women golfers in the world.

The tournament will be held July 21-26, 2015 at Blythefield Country Club, and will once again benefit the retailer’s Simply Give program that restocks the shelves of food pantries across the Midwest.

During the inaugural tournament Aug. 7-10, the crowds exceeded expectations with more than 40,000 spectators coming out for the week. Rookie superstar Mirim Lee claimed her first LPGA Tour victory with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff against fellow South Korean Inbee Park.

“The success of the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft greatly exceeded our expectations, and afforded us an unmatched opportunity to raise awareness and funding for hunger relief in the Midwest,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “The community really embraced this tournament, and we look forward to bringing another exciting event to them next year.”

The praise for the inaugural event didn’t stop at the monetary impact on the hungry; it made a tremendous impact on the LPGA professionals during their week in Grand Rapids.

Runner-up Inbee Park noticed the crowds cheering her on throughout the week.

“I was really surprised how they love golf here in Michigan and how supportive they were," Park said. "I'm very thankful that they are supporting golf and women's golf."

Stacy Lewis saw the value in adding locations like Grand Rapids to the LPGA schedule.

"I think just by the fans and all the crowds we've had this week, it shows that we need to be here," said Lewis, the No. 1 ranked player in the world during the Meijer LPGA Classic. "We had a great first year."

Some even spoke on the excitement for years to come.

"This was a first-class event," Suzann Pettersen said. "The venue, great golf course. I'm happy to be back here next year."

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (July 28, 2014)  Meijer awarded two golfers from Michigan State University and the University of Michigan sponsor exemptions into the field of professionals playing in the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft, which will be held Aug. 4-10 at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids.

Lindsey McPherson, of Michigan State University, and Grace Choi, of the University of Michigan, will compete alongside the best female golfers in the world.

“We are pleased to invite Lindsey and Grace to play in their first LPGA Tour event,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “We hope that by providing this opportunity, we’re helping them to grow in their careers if they choose to join the professional ranks. As a company focused on our community, we are also very excited to bring local talent to the field of professionals.”

McPherson, a Flushing, Mich. native, started playing golf competitively at age 15, and is entering her senior year at MSU after competing in a career-high seven tournaments this past season. She recently tied a career-best ninth at the Big Ten Championships to help lead the Spartans to their third Big Ten title in four years.

“When my coach, Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, first started telling me about the Meijer LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids, I thought she was asking to see if I wanted to go help out or go watch the tournament, because it would be a great event,” McPherson said. “When she said I was actually going to be playing in the field as a sponsor exemption from Meijer, it was unbelievable. I’m incredibly excited and want to thank everyone at Meijer for this amazing opportunity to be able to represent Michigan State and my family at a professional tournament playing the game that I love.”

Choi, who will be a sophomore at U-M in the fall, had a stellar performance on the golf team this past year. She was presented the team award for low scoring average and was also named Big Ten Golfer of the Week this past March. She ended the season averaging 75.64 strokes per round, which was a U-M freshman record.

“I’m so thankful for the wonderful opportunity Meijer has given me with their generous exemption into their event,” said Choi, of Dallas, Texas. “It has been a dream of mine since I was little to play on the LPGA and compete with the best players in the world. I’m really looking forward to learning from the best and proudly representing the University of Michigan.”

To learn more about the players and the significance of this honor, view a video that features McPherson and Choi on the course. In addition, please visit the Meijer Newsroom for more information on the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft, including sharable photos.

Each title sponsor of an LPGA event is able to award sponsor exemptions into the tournament. Meijer awarded McPherson and Choi last week with certificates into the field of professionals. The $1.5 million Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft will host a full-field of 144 players playing 72 holes of stroke play over four days of competition.

“We know these ladies have great careers ahead of them – both on and off the field – and we’re thrilled to have them play in the tournament this year,” Tournament Director Lesley Baker said. “Giving these local amateurs a chance to prove themselves on the biggest stage is great, not only for the players, but also for the fans and the community.”

Fans can cheer these hometown favorites on in the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft. Tickets are still available via the website The event will offer a family-friendly atmosphere with events for everyone in addition to world-class golf.

Meijer LPGA Celebrity Chef Cookoff presented by Kraft

Three nationally-acclaimed celebrity chefs – Cat Cora, Carla Hall and Gail Simmons – will participate in the Meijer LPGA Celebrity Chef Cookoff presented by Kraft, a friendly competition and the latest community event added to the weeklong LPGA Tour stop in Grand Rapids next month.

The fun and interactive cooking event will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, and will showcase the chefs’ elegant culinary creations with event proceeds benefiting the Meijer Simply Give program, which replenishes the shelves of food pantries throughout the Midwest.

A limited number of general public tickets are now on sale for $100 each, which include food, wine and a ticket to the golf tournament for the weekend.

“We are excited about this event, and what each of these chefs will bring to Grand Rapids – entertainment, and passion for cooking and community support,” Tournament Director Lesley Baker said. “We think the community will appreciate the opportunity to support such a worthwhile program like Simply Give.”

The three celebrity chefs in attendance this year are:

·         Cat Cora: She was the first female Iron Chef on Food Network’s Iron Chef America. Since then, Cora has continued to evolve her craft to become an accomplished author, restaurateur, contributing editor, avid philanthropist and television host.

·         Carla Hall: She is a co-host of ABC Daytime’s lifestyle series, “The Chew.” Hall is best known as a competitor and fan favorite on Bravo’s “Top Chef,” where she won over audiences with her philosophy to always cook with love.

·         Gail Simmons: She is a trained culinary expert and judge on Bravo’s Emmy-winning series “Top Chef,” as well as head critic on “Top Chef Masters.” Since 2004, Simmons has been Special Projects Director at Food & Wine Magazine.

Each celebrity chef will prepare a unique menu, which will include an appetizer, main course and a dessert. A panel of judges made up of a local celebrity, and Meijer, LPGA and Kraft representatives will determine the winner.

The tournament will make a donation to the four local food pantries of the winning chef’s choice.

The event will also be interactive with the celebrity chefs located at stations to greet guests, explain the courses, answer guest questions and share food samples.

“The Grand Rapids area has an appreciation for food, and we think this event is a great way to pair world-class culinary creations and great entertainment with a cause that does so much good within Meijer communities,” said Randy Stewart, group vice president of foods for Meijer.

Country music fans will recognize Gary Allan on the heels of his newly-released album, “Set You Free,” which recently reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart. Multi-platinum fan favorites, Big & Rich, will also take to the stage to entertain the crowd.

“We promised that the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft was going to offer something for everyone in the Grand Rapids community, and we aim to deliver,” Meijer President J.K.
