Meijer LPGA 5k Run & Walk Registration Now Open

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (March 31, 2016) – The Meijer LPGA 5k Run & Walk presented by Kellogg’s® will once again bring the community together by featuring fun yet competitive challenges for the community, families, individuals and members of the media while benefitting the Meijer Simply Give program.

The race will be powered by Gazelle Sports, and will start at 8 a.m. June 18 at Rockford High School. Each participant will receive a Meijer LPGA 5k Run & Walk shirt, a complimentary breakfast provided by Kellogg’s®, and two daily tickets to the golf tournament, valid for any one day admission Tuesday through Sunday.

“The Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give offers something for everyone,” Meijer Co-Chairman Doug Meijer said. “The race is a great way to engage the entire Grand Rapids community while ultimately increasing awareness around hunger in the communities where our customers and team members work and live. Whether you are walking, running, or competing with a team, everyone can join us in this race against hunger.”

Additionally, the Meijer healthy living advisors and experts have teamed up with Gazelle Sports to build training programs for participants to use in preparation for the run.

Community 5k Run & Walk

The cost to participate is $15 per person, ages 17 and under, and $25 per person, ages 18 and older. Strollers are welcome at the event.

The top three runners in each age group will receive $500, $250, and $100 in Meijer gift cards, respectively.

Community Challenges

The cost to participate is $150 per team. The top five finishers in each team will be scored.

  • Community: Local corporations, community organizations, families and schools throughout Grand Rapids are encouraged to put together a team of five to 10 runners.
  • Media: Meijer will donate the entry fees for up to five teams of members of the media. Each team must include five to 10 runners.

Winners of the team challenges will receive a $1,000 donation to the Meijer Simply Give program in their team’s name.

Similar to last year, proceeds from the tournament – and each of the week’s festivities – will benefit the Meijer Simply Give program that restocks the shelves of food pantries throughout the Midwest. The Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give has donated more than $1.3 million to local food pantries through the Simply Give program.

Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft Raised $750,000 to Feed Hungry Families

Memorable week of golf raises funds for Meijer Simply Give program to restock Midwest food pantries

Representatives with the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft today deemed the second annual tournament a success with a $750,000 donation to the retailer’s Simply Give program, which advances its mission of helping Midwest food pantries restock their shelves and improve the quality of life within the region. American LPGA professional Lexi Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla. took home the trophy at the LPGA Tour event, which took place at Blythefield Country Club July 23-26, but the real winners are the families who will benefit from the donation.

“Thanks to the great weather and enthusiastic crowds, the second annual Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft was a complete success and will continue improving the quality of life in the Midwest,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “Everyone who has supported the tournament has helped make a difference because this week was about more than world-class golf. It was an opportunity for the entire community to come together to have fun while supporting a very important cause – feeding the hungry.”

While attendance figures are not yet available, representatives said the tournament continued to exceed expectations.

Meijer began its Simply Give program in November 2008 and has since generated more than $16 million for its food pantry partners. The contributions donated as a result of the Meijer LPGA Classic are due, in large part, to the generous Meijer customers who attended the tournament week events, and the sponsors who helped make the event a success.

The $750,000 donation will be divided among the retailer’s estimated 200 food pantry partners participating in the fall Simply Give campaign, which runs through Sept. 12.

“We receive about two-third of our funding for food purchases through the Meijer Simply Give program,” said Mark Tallis, of the Holt Community Food Bank. “We appreciate Meijer for having the Simply Give program because it gives us the ability to help our families with more food and keep them stable so that the children in our community are not going hungry.”

To participate in the Simply Give program, customers can purchase a $10 donation card at their local Meijer store, which will be converted into a Meijer food-only gift card and given to the food pantry selected by the store. Meijer will stretch every customer’s donation further during Double Match Days Sept. 3-5 in recognition of Hunger Action Month. That means for every $10 donation card purchase, Meijer will contribute $20, resulting in a total $30 donation.

A crowd of enthusiastic fans lined the ropes at Blythefield Country Club July 23-26 to watch a competitive field of 144 world-class golfers play 72 holes of stroke play. Ultimately, Lexi Thompson claimed the title as the Meijer LPGA Classic champion, making this her fifth LPGA Tour victory. At age 12, she was the youngest golfer ever to qualify to play in the U.S. Women’s Open.

Thompson said it was important to start the tournament well.

“I knew I had to make birdies against everybody in the field basically with Lizette (Salas) and then Gerina (Piller) behind me, so I knew I had to make a lot of birdies out there and it’s always nice to start off with one,” Thompson said.

The First Tee Junior Course Reporter, Pippa Gibson

First Tee 3Hello, I’m Pippa Gibson, a Junior Course Reporter for First Tee of West Michigan and I'm going to tell you about my experience with the Meijer LPGA Classic.

The LPGA stands for Ladies Professional Golf Association and it was founded in 1950. The LPGA is still going strong today as a non-profit organization. The Grand Rapids stop of the LPGA tour is sponsored by Meijer and Kraft, and money raised through Simply Give will be given to local food pantries.

This year, the First Tee of West Michigan program asked me as well as two other First Tee participants to be Junior Course Reporters at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Our first story was at a special Media Day event in June. We each got to ask Brittany Lang a question! Unfortunately, Austin Ernst was also scheduled but her flight was cancelled and she couldn’t make it to the press conference. Meeting Brittany Lang was very cool.  She followed her dreams of joining the LPGA. Brittany is funny and kind, but also persistent.

She’s played the Solheim Cup three times. Brittany gets help from her brother Luke Lang, who is also her caddy. She told me that Luke “believe’s in me more than I believe in myself.” I was happy to meet her and glad that Brittany made it to the Meijer LPGA Classic Media Day.

On Tuesday July 21, I was a little nervous about the player press conferences at Blythefield Country Club, but luckily another First Tee reporter, Alex, was there and he had interviewed some players already. (Alex, Sophia and I were at the press conferences for Mirim Lee and on Wednesday for Liz Nagel, Inbee Park, and Morgan Pressel). After I watched Alex finish his interview I went with him to begin my interviews. The first golfer who was heading toward the driving range was Katy Harris. We told her we were reporters from the First Tee of West Michigan and asked her if we could ask her some questions. I asked her “What club do you think you need to improve on the most?” Katy told me, “My irons.” We said thank you and good luck, then left. That was how most our interviews went. One of the most interesting interviews was with “Q” Kyu-Jung Baek from Korea. She didn’t speak English but had her caddy translate into Korean for her. She told me she started playing professionally in Korea in the KLPGA, but this year is her rookie year in the LPGA!

Thursday I went to the #Swing Like A Girl golf clinic at Boulder Creek and met pro golfer Allison Duncan who helped us with our Photo Finish swings. She said I had a good finish! Here’s a photo of Allison Duncan my friend Abby.

I think the best part about being a First Tee Course Reporter was I felt like I was part of the LPGA, and it was exciting to walk around and be in the middle of the professional women golfers. We got to go behind the scenes! There was a lot of energy and everyone seemed happy to be playing. It made me realize that the players in the LPGA practice what First Tee teaches me, that perseverance and confidence will help me be a better player. I’m not sure I will ever be listed in the Player Guide, but it would be really cool if I was!

The First Tee Course Reporter, Alexander Karhunen

First Tee2My name is Alexander Karhunen, I am a Junior Reporter for the First Tee of West Michigan. Being a Junior Reporter I had the ability to witness what goes on during the practice days of the 2015 Meijer LPGA Classic.Throughout the practice days there was a lot of action going on. I was able to interview many of the golfers, and I asked all of them the same question. “What is your main focus of practice to prepare for the upcoming tournament?” Here are what three of golfers said.

Tiffany Joh replied, “When you first get to a golf course its all about the speed of the greens.  You’re hitting a lot more of the longer lag putts, and that’s pretty much everybody’s top priority. Your long game is gonna be whatever you brought so that’s not going to change very much, but one thing you could definitely work on during the week and actually improve in your speed control on the greens.

Christine Meier said, “I think this week it’s going to be a lot of off the tee because it's really crucial that you hit the fairways. The rough is very thick and heavy, so if I hit the fairways it would be easier.” Christine Meier was also one of the two ladies who qualified from the Big Ten to play in the Meijer LPGA Classic.

Kim Kaufman said, “Right now I am focusing on hitting some wedges because I think this is a scoring golf course and if you a hit some good wedges on these par fives and make under par that can be very important.”

Not only was I able to interview golfers while they were practicing on the course, I was also able to attend some of the press conferences. I had the ability to talk to Inbee Park and Mirim Lee. I asked Inbee Park “Where do you spend most of your time on a practice day like today? For example the putting green, the course, or the driving range.”

Inbee Park replied “On a practice round I usually spend like thirty minutes on the range, and thirty minutes on the putting green, and then I try to play nine holes.”

I asked Mirim “What age did you start golfing and what made you like it so much that you ended up pursuing it as a career?”

Mirim Lee replied by saying, “I started at 12 years old and then my father was really, really, good so my reason is my father.

I was very lucky to have the opportunity to be the Junior Course Reporter at the Meijer LPGA Classic 2015, and get to meet some amazing golfers. On top of everything I learned from the golfers, I also got to see what goes on behind the scenes at golf tournaments like this one. I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the tournament turns out!

The First Tee Course Reporter, Sophia Luciani

First Tee1Hi my name is Sophia Luciani, I am a Junior Course Reporter for The First Tee of West Michigan. As a Junior Course Reporter I was able to witness the behind the scenes action of the 2015 Meijer LPGA Classic.

Monday didn’t consist of actual tournament play, but I was able to see some of the players practicing with their coaches one on one. I watched Belén Mozo and many others on the putting green and Christina Kim playing the course before the tournament. Many other players were playing the course in a qualifying round.

Tuesday there was a lot more action on the course. I interviewed many players asking them the same question, “ What part of your game are you most confident in for the upcoming tournament?” The answers were very similar in that most players answered putting, few said their strongest part was hitting off the tee. I was able to talk to many players, but the one that had the biggest impact on me was Paula Reto. Paula Reto, like me, didn’t start playing golf until her mid teens, but she was able to take that as an opportunity to become an amazing golfer and eventually play in the LPGA. Tuesday they also had a press conference with previous winner of the Meijer Classic, Mirim Lee. Mirim was asked many questions on how it felt to be back in Michigan after her win last year. She answered all her questions excellently explaining that she hopes she will have the chance to win again.

Wednesday, like Tuesday, was full of interviews and press conferences. Talking on Wednesday was Liz Nagel, Inbee Park, and Morgan Pressel. Liz Nagel previously played golf at Michigan State University and was super excited to play in her home state. She talked about how she'd played near here but never at Blythefield. Nagel says she is thrilled to be here and have a large crowd of friends and family cheering for her. Inbee Park was happy to be back in Michigan and excited to be able to play on this course again. " I really love the golf course here and I think it really suits my game," Park states," I had a great result here last year even though I lost the playoff." Morgan Pressel, like Nagel had a connection to Michigan. She was not born in Michigan but most of her summers were spent here. Pressel is excited about playing in Michigan where she grew up and learned the game of golf.

Being a Junior Course Reporter was a great opportunity and I am very fortunate to be involved. I am looking forward to seeing the tournament and cheering on the players.
