Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft Expands Menu of Free Activities for Young Golf Fans

Junior golfers invited to participate in free weeklong activities

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (May 27, 2015) – The Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft seeks to engage young golf fans by expanding its menu of free interactive and on-site activities.

“The Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft is working diligently to engage families throughout the community,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “By offering a variety of youth programs, we feel that we are able to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for parents and youth alike.”

The Meijer LPGA Junior Clinic presented by Johnson & Johnson will take place at 1 p.m. July 22-24 at Boulder Creek Golf Course, 5750 Brewer Ave. NE, in Belmont, Mich. Youth, ages 17 years and under, are invited to participate in the free, two-hour clinics that will feature group instruction, activities, and games by LPGA professionals and local golf pros.

That age group will also receive free admission to the tournament, held July 23-26 at Blythefield Country Club with a ticketed adult.

Once at the tournament, youth will have access to the Meijer LPGA Kids Center presented by Dove when it’s open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 22-26. The tent, located between holes 11 and 16, will features arts and crafts, golf activities, and LPGA player autograph sessions throughout the week.

Similar to last year, proceeds from the tournament – and each of the week’s festivities– will benefit the Simply Give program. The inaugural Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft raised $600,000 for the Simply Give program to feed those in need.

The Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft will host a full field of 144 players playing 72 holes of stroke play over four days of competition July 21-26 at Blythefield Country Club.

Meijer LPGA Celebrity Chef Cookoff presented by Kraft

The 2015 Meijer LPGA Celebrity Chef Cookoff presented by Kraft Pairs Chef Mario Batali with Returning Culinary Expert Gail Simmons

Nationally-acclaimed celebrity chef Mario Batali and culinary expert Gail Simmons will participate in this year’s Meijer LPGA Celebrity Chef Cookoff presented by Kraft.

The entertaining and interactive cooking event will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 24 at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, and will showcase their personal culinary creations with event proceeds benefiting the Meijer Simply Give program, which replenishes the shelves of food pantries throughout the Midwest.

Both Batali and Simmons will prepare an appetizer and main course while interacting with guests throughout the evening. The event will also feature local pastry fare that will be voted on by the guests.

A limited number of general public tickets are now on sale for $100 apiece. The ticket includes food, wine and a ticket to the golf tournament for the weekend.

“Grand Rapids is a city that is passionate about great food, which is why we think this specific event is such a highlight of tournament week,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “After the success of last year’s event, we are excited to open up more tickets to the general public while still maintaining the museum’s unique atmosphere.”

This year’s event will feature:

  • Mario Batali: He counts 26 restaurants, 10 cookbooks, numerous television shows and two Eataly marketplaces (with a third opening soon) among his ever-expanding empire of deliciousness. Batali appears daily on ABC’s “The Chew,” a daytime talk show on ABC that celebrates and explores life through food.
  • Gail Simmons: She is a trained culinary expert and judge on Bravo’s Emmy-winning series “Top Chef,” as well as head critic on “Top Chef Masters.” Since 2004, Simmons has been Special Projects Director at Food & Wine Magazine. She participated alongside Cat Cora and Carla Hall in last year’s Meijer LPGA Celebrity Chef Cookoff.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be coming back to Grand Rapids,” Simmons said. “Last year, the community really embraced the inaugural event and its great cause. I’m so impressed and excited about what Meijer has done to raise awareness for their Simply Give program.”

Meijer LPGA 5K Run & Walk presented by Kellogg’s Registration Open

Meijer LPGA 5k Run & Walk presented by Kellogg’s® Brings the Community Together with Multiple Challenges

The Meijer LPGA 5k Run & Walk presented by Kellogg’s® seeks to bring the community together by featuring multiple competitive challenges for corporations, schools, members of the media, families and individuals.

The race will once again be powered by Gazelle Sports, and will start at 8 a.m. July 25 at Rockford High School. It will include a complimentary breakfast provided by Kellogg’s®.

“The race is really another way to get the community involved with the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft, and ultimately help increase awareness around hunger in the communities we serve,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “Tournament week will offer something for everyone, and this year we wanted to kick the race up a notch by incorporating fun, yet competitive challenges for the community.”

“The great thing about the Meijer LPGA 5k Run is you don’t have to be a professional athlete to take part. Anyone can run a 5k,” said Dathan Ritzenhein, a Rockford, Mich. native and professional long-distance runner who placed 7th in the 2015 Boston Marathon. “Building off the success of last year’s inaugural event, the 5k is a great way to get the whole family involved in a healthy lifestyle, receive free tickets to the tournament, and help feed those in need.”

Each participant will receive a Meijer LPGA 5k Run & Walk presented by Kellogg’s® shirt, and two daily tickets to the golf tournament, valid for any one day Tuesday through Sunday.

Community 5k Run & Walk

The cost to participate is $15 per person, ages 17 and younger, and $25 per person, ages 18 and older. Strollers are welcome at the event.

The top three runners in each age group will receive $500, $250, and $100 in Meijer gift cards, respectively.

Community Challenges

The cost to participate on a team is $150 per team. The top five finishers in each team will be scored.

  • Corporate: Local corporations are encouraged to put together a team of five to 10 runners.
  • School: Meijer will donate the entry fees for up to 10 teams of high school students. Each team must include five to 10 runners.
  • Media: Meijer will donate the entry fees for up to five teams of members of the media. Each team must include five to 10 runners.

Winners of the community challenges will receive a $1,000 donation to the Meijer Simply Give program in their team’s name.

With Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer as the title sponsor, the driving mission of the tournament is focused on feeding the hungry and improving the quality of life within the region. The tournament will coincide with the retailer’s Simply Give program, which has raised nearly $14 million for food pantries across the Midwest since its inception in November 2008. Similar to last year, proceeds from the tournament and each of the week’s festivities – including the 5k Run & Walk – will benefit the Simply Give program.

“As runners, we all understand the value of nutrition as it relates not only to our health, but our performance,” said Greg Meyer, a professional long-distance runner from Rockford, Mich. who won the Boston Marathon in 1983. “Helping to provide nutrition to families in need offers them a greater likelihood of being healthy and productive in the community. I hope all area runners and walkers will help support the Meijer Simply Give program by joining me and Dathan Ritzenhein in the Meijer LPGA 5k.”

Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft Announces 2015 Dates

2015 Dates Feature Image

After a successful inaugural tournament that generated $600,000 for food pantries across the Midwest, the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft will return to Grand Rapids in 2015 for another week of community events and the best women golfers in the world.

The tournament will be held July 21-26, 2015 at Blythefield Country Club, and will once again benefit the retailer’s Simply Give program that restocks the shelves of food pantries across the Midwest.

During the inaugural tournament Aug. 7-10, the crowds exceeded expectations with more than 40,000 spectators coming out for the week. Rookie superstar Mirim Lee claimed her first LPGA Tour victory with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff against fellow South Korean Inbee Park.

“The success of the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft greatly exceeded our expectations, and afforded us an unmatched opportunity to raise awareness and funding for hunger relief in the Midwest,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “The community really embraced this tournament, and we look forward to bringing another exciting event to them next year.”

The praise for the inaugural event didn’t stop at the monetary impact on the hungry; it made a tremendous impact on the LPGA professionals during their week in Grand Rapids.

Runner-up Inbee Park noticed the crowds cheering her on throughout the week.

“I was really surprised how they love golf here in Michigan and how supportive they were," Park said. "I'm very thankful that they are supporting golf and women's golf."

Stacy Lewis saw the value in adding locations like Grand Rapids to the LPGA schedule.

"I think just by the fans and all the crowds we've had this week, it shows that we need to be here," said Lewis, the No. 1 ranked player in the world during the Meijer LPGA Classic. "We had a great first year."

Some even spoke on the excitement for years to come.

"This was a first-class event," Suzann Pettersen said. "The venue, great golf course. I'm happy to be back here next year."

Growing the Game in Grand Rapids

GAB_8541

Meijer co-chairman Hank Meijer welcomed a group of 150 junior golfers to Boulder Creek Golf Club for the Meijer LPGA Junior Clinic presented by Johnson & Johnson. LPGA professional Kim Kaufman along with sponsor exemptions Grace Choi and Lindsey McPherson gave the kids some tips on improving their golf game. The children were able to get a hands on experience while visiting three stations to work on different golf techniques. To close out the afternoon, the junior golfers were shuttled to Blythefield Country Club to interact with players and watch them practice.
